An Exotic Application of Seismic Interferometry in Medical Physics:
Diffuse Optical Imaging Using Virtual Light Sources
Seismic interferometry deals with the creation of synthetic seismic
measurements. Similar principles can be applied to optical imaging of thick tissue. We show that the optical diffusion Green's function between two
detectors can be calculated by the combination of detector readings due to
multiple point light sources. This allows the utilization of virtual light
sources at the detector positions in diffuse optical imaging. To demonstrate
the feasibility of the virtual source method, we performed simulations and a
phantom experiment.
