Current Challenges to Cancer Treatment - Can Physicists Help?

Abstract: While major advances in cancer biology have been made in recent years, there still remain significant shortcomings in cancer treatments. A major challenge is the inefficient drug delivery due to the abnormal tumor vasculature, and the failure of current chemotherapeutic agents to completely eradicate tumor cells, resulting in acquisition of chemoresistance and relapse. Another complication that directly impacts treatment response in tumors comes from the fact that cancer cells are comprised of heterogeneous cell populations. This talk will discuss if physical and mathematical approaches can help in designing efficient cancer treatments, in particular for combinations of multiple treatment modalities.
