Symplectic Integration and Operator Splitting

Abstract: When a physical system possesses certain symmetries, it is desirable, and sometimes essential, to develop an integrator that preserves these symmetries. In this talk, we will discuss how such integrators can be developed using the operator splitting technique and Lie algebras. These integrators are very simple to implement, but can be very efficient. We will use the harmonic oscillator and Hamiltonian splitting as an illustrative example, and will demonstrate the general applicability of these techniques to other systems and operators.
