Abstract:In a Brans-Dicke-Jordan type of gravitational theory where the Jordan scalar field is related to the norm of the electromagnetic potential it is possible to explain dark energy and the Newton gravitational constant in terms of the cosmological backround value of the electromagnetic scalar potential. Advantages and shortcomings of such a model will be discussed in relation to Type 1 supernovae data, time variation of the gravitational constant and possible relation to the Standard Model.
