Pickin' nuts

This is a typical nut-picking scene (I am the bald one on the left. I think I was fifteen or so when this picture was taken). We use these baskets strapped to our waist to pick them. The baskets are made from fresh shoots of wild hazel, and my maternal grandfather was a master of making them.

Here you can also see me carrying the filled bag of hazelnuts.

Like in most of rural Turkey, a group of people coming together to help each other is called imece. Here, the imece is taking a break to pose for the camera.
